Biography

I am a Scottish artist, and a graduate of the University of Glasgow where I obtained a First Class degree in the history of art.  I then trained in life painting at Heatherley School of Art and received instruction in old master painting techniques in the Studio of Rosa Branson MBE.

Currently based in London, much of my focus is  deeply rooted within the realm of landscape. Distant isles on the horizon, brooding headlands, sunlight bouncing off sand and approaching storms suggest the sublime, mystery and romance of the natural world. The observed landscape becomes a mirror for my innermost yearnings and emotions.

Studies in art history and traditional painting from observation have enabled me to infuse the techniques of the old masters within my work. Influences as varied as nineteenth century romantic landscape painting, symbolist art, contemporary classical realism and Scottish colourists inspire my approach.

I am also a member of the Hesketh Hubbard Art Society, and draw and paint regularly from life with this group.

I work in both oil and watercolour, finding the versatility, subtlety and unpredictable nature of these mediums ideal for evoking colour, light and atmosphere.
